The Protean Garden

The title ‘Protean’ draws from the Greek mythological figure Proteus, a prophetic sea god who constantly shifts his form to evade fate. Only by holding fast to his essential being can one uncover the truth. Later, Goethe extended ‘Proteus’ as a fundamental metaphor for nature—where all things exist in a state of flux and transformation, and “change” itself is the eternal, unchanging essence.
In this exhibition, artist Jun Zhang continues his ‘Stillness’ series, capturing this very notion of ‘change’ through the tactile, morphing tendrils of plants—rendering it a vision both psychedelic and romantic, yet imbued with peril. The vegetation in his work resembles an eternal Proteus: starting from basic geometric origins, it undergoes a series of metamorphoses to grow into new visual forms. These forms construct a rich network of intertextuality—sometimes echoing, sometimes antagonistic—weaving together reflections on the complex, interdependent reality of human coexistence within our contemporary context. It is as if the viewer is invited into a Protean experience of life itself: only by stepping into the river of life in flux can we, beneath its myriad forms, touch the truth of our shared existence.
