He is never known, but is the Knower. There is no other seer than He, there is no other hearer than He, there is no other thinker than He, there is no other knower than He(Atman). He is the Inner Controller—your own self and immortal.——Brihadaranyaka UpanishadWe are honored to announce that we will launch artist Li Kejin’s first solo exhibition Atman on June 30.
This exhibition will show the audience the artist’s thinking of the relationship among the lost in technology development, the shackles of desire, and inner peace. The light and shadow related to Tokusatsu (a Japanese term for live-action films or television programs that use practical special effects heavily), rough brushstrokes nearly like graffiti, contrasting solid colors, and unreal images of people or beasts. All of that are the techniques, elements, and contents that often appeared in Li Kejin’s artworks. Those abstract light and clear outlines are some sort of pacings and wandering between abstraction and figuration. We divided Li Kejin’s artworks into two categories in site: Narrative-based and Partial texture-based, by breaking up our space. It presents two states that the artist regards as fearness: Extremely Depression and Suddenly out of control.
Under the release of seemingly crazy and exposed emotions, it is the artist’s delicate thinking about the sublime Atman (self), and the persistent pursuit of the truth hidden in the real world. He walked towards the light, so there was a long shadow behind him.
